Why Kahala's Character Creates Pest Pressure

The mature canopy trees throughout Kahala — many of them 50 to 80 years old — are among the most beautiful in Honolulu and among the most effective pest superhighways on Oahu. Roof rats (Rattus rattus) use overhanging branches to access rooftops directly, bypassing ground-level barriers entirely. Properties along Kahala Avenue and Black Point Road, where large mango and monkeypod trees arch over rooflines, face some of the highest roof rat pressure on the island. Termites are the other major threat in Kahala. Cockroaches — particularly the large American cockroach — are a year-round presence in Kahala's older homes, entering through ageing pipe penetrations, drain systems, and gaps around utility lines. Properties within a few blocks of Kahala Mall and its food court experience elevated cockroach pressure as populations from nearby commercial waste migrate into residential areas at night. Ocean-adjacent lots along Kahala Beach also face ant activity — ghost ants and Argentine ants readily colonise irrigated garden beds and enter homes through tiny cracks in foundations and window frames.

Mosquitoes are a seasonal concern in Kahala's larger landscaped gardens, particularly where ornamental water features, bird baths, and irrigated planting beds create standing water. Properties backing onto drainage easements or with mature bromeliads in the landscaping — which hold water in their leaf axils — often have disproportionate mosquito problems relative to their neighbours.
