Development Pressure: How New Construction Drives Pest Invasions

Drywood termites enter new homes through unscreened attic vents and gaps around new construction that settle and crack within the first few years of a building's life. New-home buyers should schedule their first termite inspection within the first two years of ownership, regardless of any builder warranties.

Cockroaches in Kapolei are driven partly by the commercial expansion of the area — the restaurants, fast food outlets, and grocery stores around Kapolei Commons create a cockroach reservoir population that extends into the surrounding residential streets. The American cockroach is the dominant species, moving through drainage systems at night. Rodents — particularly roof rats displaced by construction — are increasingly reported in Kapolei neighborhoods, especially those bordering undeveloped land along Makakilo Drive and the Kapolei perimeter. Ko Olina's resort development to the west also keeps wildlife pressure active in the western edge of the community.
